My Mini-Vacation to see Spontaneanation!

So late last night, I posted my latest Snapshot Saturday vlog, and I’m going to explain today why we went on our mini-vacation and what we did!

So a couple months ago was my birthday, and I really wanted to take a weekend trip down to LA to watch Spontaneanation the weekend of my birthday. Unfortunately, the timing was not the best, and I was a bit pouty (read: really, really pouty) about it, so instead of going the first weekend of April, my lovely boyfriend bought us plane tickets and show tickets for the first week of June, which was this weekend!

It was actually our first time on a plane together. I don’t really mind flying, but I think Taylor like taking the drive down to SoCal better. I really wanted to fly this time, however, because we would just be down for the day of the show and then fly back the next day. It was just faster timing.

The flight was at 9AM on Saturday morning and it was early! My mom was nice enough to drop us off, but the security line was long (of course) and the boarding was delayed for about 15 minutes. Luckily, we didn’t have solid plans until that night. Taylor got us a really nice AirBnb so after landing and eating breakfast, we checked in early.

It was surprisingly cold in LA! When we left the San Francisco airport (SFO), it was sunny and almost hot for San Francisco. But when we landed, it was weirdly foggy and cold. It was probably in the mid-60s and there was a fog cloud all over LAX. Walking helped, and frankly we were glad for the weather, but when I was packing, I was packing for a warm mid-80s, like the forecast predicted. Alas, should’ve packed some jeans!

We really just chilled all day, which was nice. Taylor said I could do anything I wanted, and really for my birthday, I would’ve just liked to stay in bed and relaxed. We did walk to get pizza, which was really close by to where we were staying, but because we had gotten up so early to go to the airport, and because I knew we’d have to get up today too, I just wanted to stay in and rest. Besides, LA is not really convenient if you don’t have a car.

That evening we took a Lyft to Largo at the Coronet and checked in to get our seats! By now I was getting really anxious; I always get really nervous when I’m about to do something I really want to do. Near Largo, there’s a mall so we passed the time by window shopping. The mall closed really early, like at 8PM which was extremely surprising to us because we assumed LA shops would stay open later.

We went back to Largo and got our seats. It was a lot more cramped than I thought it was going to be! And we are relatively small people, I can’t imagine how the other people felt sitting in their seats. The guest this month was Robyn Hitchcock, who is a singer-songwriter. I didn’t know who he was before going to the show, but he was delightfully charming and funny. The improvisors were Nyima Funk, Coleen Smith, and Chris Tallman. It’s funny because I know what they sound like, and I’ve seen their pictures before, but actually watching them talk was a treat. And of course, Paul F. Tompkins. I love this man! He was just as charming and hilarious and amazing as I hoped and the show was hilarious. I believe the episode we watched last night will be posted in August, so that’s not bad!

I really, really loved the show. I sincerely hope I get to see another show in the future, and I hope this podcast goes on and on forever. It was the best birthday present ever!

My Travels: Anniversary Trip to SoCal!

I have taken the week to process my not-on-vacation status and now I’m ready to talk about and post pictures from my vacation! If you didn’t get to look at my May 7th Snapshot Saturday, I put up some video and pictures but here’s more detailed explanations (if you wanted them)!

So May the 4th has been deemed Taylor’s and my (Taylor-and-I’s?) anniversary so we planned a little get away down to Southern California (SoCal) as it is one of our favourite places and, bonus, his dad lives down there and we could visit that part of his family!

Sunday, May 1st

We had brunch, made a last minute pit stop at Target, and then were on our way! We got to Ventura around 6:30-7 and were whisked away to Taylor’s aunt’s house in Santa Paula, where it was his cousin’s boyfriend’s birthday, I think? We basically invited ourselves over (and brought ribs) for the barbeque! I met an adorable dog named Callie (Calleigh?) and she was a really good guard dog, but she didn’t want to take a selfie with me (which is fine, whatever).
May 1st

Monday, May 2nd

We drove the remaining hour or so down to Los Angeles and went directly to Universal Studios! We bought season passes at Costco the week before because we weren’t sure how many days we were planning on going, but we were definitely hitting up the new Harry Potter Land first! It’s called The Wizarding World of Harry Potter but I’m 100% no one actually calls it that, c’mon now. We also went down through the Universal City Walk and found the Things From Another World store which was pretty awesome!
May 2

We stayed at an AirBnb close to Universal and it was super nice and clean, and the host, Montgomery, was really accommodating! We accidentally left a shirt there and Montgomery was nice enough to let us know what time we could pick it up. Super great! Here’s the listing on AirBnb!

Tuesday, May 3rd

We went back for a half day at Universal to go through the rides we didn’t get to go on the day before. We found 221B Baker Street and did a little souvenir shopping! But we had to go after to our primary reason for coming down to SoCal which was glamping! If you don’t know what glamping is, it’s just nicer (glamourous, you might say) accommodations for camping. I don’t like tents or shovelling to go to the bathroom, so having a nice Airstream (which is like a small, tin RV) and a really nice portapotty! Doesn’t hurt we had a little WiFi and a handy grill too!
May 3

The place we stayed at is called Silver Sky Acres and you guys really need to go there. The host, Lydia, was super nice, and the place was nothing short of amazing. I can’t stress enough about how great it was to relax out there and how much I want to go back. Here’s the AirBnb listing!

Bonus, there were dogs! The Australian Blue Heeler’s name is Georgie and the Doberman’s name is U2 (or You Too?) and they lived with the host on the property. The Mastiff puppy’s name is Blue(?) and lived with a neighbor but always seemed to be around while we were cooking ;) They were all freaking adorable and I wanted to take them all home, but taking pictures and video of them was fine too.
May 3 - doggies!

Wednesday, May The 4th Be With You (and also our anniversary day!)

We did absolutely nothing this day except eat and relax in the moon room at Silver Sky Acres. It was the best day.
May the 4th be with you

Thursday, May 5th

We headed back to Ventura to stay with Taylor’s dad again, and his brother took us out for lunch at a really good Cali-Mex place called Snapper Jacks! It was also Civil War day so we probably annoyed everyone by disagreeing slightly and then saying “Civil War! Civil War!” right after it. It was hilarious to us though! We were on opposite sides (Team Cap!) so it made it extra funny to us.
May 5

Semi-spoiler-free review! I gotta say, I was really disappointed with the movie; this was one of those times I really wanted the movie to mimic the comics and while the beginning of the movie did kinda coincide with the comics, the rest of the movie did not, and was therefore severely disappointing for me. But if you didn’t know about the Marvel comic book event, you’d probably enjoy the movie. I don’t know; the only thing I could think the whole time was “Harry would’ve hated this,” so there’s that.

Friday, May 6th

We walked through downtown Ventura again! We basically relaxed all day again and at night, we had another small get together with some of Taylor’s family. The highlight of the night was playing Supernatural Clue! We played it with a full board, so all 6 people were taken, but someone messed up and no one ended up winning. It was definitely momentous though! We also watched What We Do In The Shadows again, and it was definitely funnier the second time! No pictures because I was lazy!

Saturday, May 7th

No pictures, as we just played more Supernatural Clue and then drove home. Vacation is over :(

Thanks for reading everyone! Let me know if you’ve been to Harry Potter Land in Los Angeles or are planning on going! And let me know if you’ve also been to Silver Sky Acres! It was freaking gorgeous!
