March is Awesome, but…

Alright, time to get serious. March is awesome, but now that it’s over, I can dish out the dirt. This particular March was not that pretty.

The unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, especially in Egypt and Libya, really scare me. Not only will this crazy dictator Gaddafi not step down, but now for some reason, we’re sending fighter jets, or whatever the official term is, to bomb them? Won’t innocent people get caught in the crossfire? This just doesn’t seem like the best idea to me. Plus, the kidnapping of Iman al-Obeidi scares the everloving bejeebus out of me. I mean, that is some Big-Brother-1984 crap right there.

And then there’s the horrific earthquake and tsunami in Japan. I probably cried my eyes out that night, after watching the news because, wow, that footage is how most of my nightmares these days are formed. Not only that, but there’s a fear about nuclear radiation that’s growing. I’m so scared and anxious for the people of Japan right now.

So, as of now, I’m almost convinced that the world is going to end in 2012, one way or another. I’m half-joking, but half-serious. I mean, look. There has always been earthquakes. Hell, I’ve had more than a couple myself. But there has been so many big ones, and they are so frequent that the crazy 2012 believers are beginning to win me over. I’ve always kind of thought that when you die, you’re going to die, and there’s nothing you can do about it, so if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen, and I’m more or less alright with that.

But earthquakes are frakking scary.

Of course, I’m obviously not saying this month has been all bad, I’m just trying to say that I’m not blind; these past 31 days haven’t been the best. But March is still awesome.

This is the First Annual March Is Awesome event! The amount to which I love my very own month of March is absurd; my birthday, my brother’s birthday, many of my friends’ birthdays, the beginning of spring, and much, much more! Will you join me in my celebration of March? Alright!

March 31st

In The Before Times: In 1994, the Nature journal reports the finding in Ethiopia of the first complete Australopithecus afarensis skull.

Celebrity Birthdays: So many birthdays today! Actors Ewan McGregor, Al Gore, Christopher Walken, Tony Cox, and William Daniels all share a birthday today. I loved McGregor since the Star Wars Trilogies, and though those movies will always be ridiculed, I will probably always love him as the young Obi-Wan. Gore, of course, was a Vice President, and a huge advocate for environmentalism. I feel like Walken needs no introduction, but he is an actor who has more than 100 films to his name, including Pulp Fiction, Sleepy Hallow, Hairspray and has hosted SNL numerous times. Cox is a little person, who played the little elf Marcus on Bad Santa, and had a guest role on Psych; I’ve only seen him on Psych, but he was fabulous. Daniels played Mr. Feeny on Boy Meets World, and I really loved that show growing up; he’ll always be Mr. Feeny to me! Also celebrating his birthday today is Craig McCracken who is the creator of The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. I liked PPG, but I really loved Foster’s! And finally, Thai actress Yanin Vismistananda starred in one of my brother’s favourite movies, Chocolate. (You’ll know why this is important if you read further.)

What’s happening today?: In some states in the US, today is Cesar Chavez Day! A couple of my friends get the day off today, and they are lucky. (Though, I know some of them didn’t get President’s Day off….)

Other: Today is my younger male sibling’s birthday. That kid was born two years, two days, and twelve hours after me. Not only that, but I was late, and he was early. What a crazy coincidence, am I right? He’s in Afghanistan right now; he’s a Lance Corporal in the Marines. I get to see him in June, when he goes back to Hawai’i! :3 Happy birthday, dude!

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments!

This is the last March Is Awesome until next year. Thank you so much for bearing with me while I filled your RSS with MIA posts. Until next year!

Celebrity Birthdays: Today, Jason Dohring and MC Hammer share a birthday. Jason Dohring was a regular on Moonlight as well as Veronica Mars, and I want him back on my TV screen, pronto! And of course MC Hammer is famous for his song “U Can’t Touch This” as well as his Hammer Pants. What would the 80s have done without him, seriously?

What’s happening today?: Today is National Doctors’ Day in the US! Most doctors are amazing human beings, with an affinity for saving people’s lives. With the exception of House, of course.

March 29th

In The Before Times: A long time ago, way back in 2008, over 370 cities in 35 countries participate in Earth Hour for the first time. I know, it was a long time ago, but I think some of you might remember it. I actually participated in that, and I’ve participated in all of them since.

Celebrity Birthdays: Okay, guys, get ready. A lot of short blurbs about celebrities who have birthdays today: Hayley McFarland plays the lovely and adorable Emily on Lie To Me; Amy Sedaris was awesome on Strangers With Candy and Elf; Marina Sirtis has been cast in several sci-fi shows, but is most famous in Star Trek: The Next Generation; Norman Snow was also on an episode of Star Trek: TNG; Christopher Kennedy Lawford is a Kennedy, an author and an activist; Annabella Sciorra was on The Sopranos and Law and Order: Criminal Intent (which is my favourite L&O); Christophe Lambert was Connor MacLeod on Highlander (and there can only be one); Brendan Gleeson was Mad-Eye Moody in the Harry Potter films, and he was in the amazing In Bruges which was amazing; Eric Idle is a member of the ever popular Monty Python, and he wrote the “Nudge, Nudge” skit, which is one of my favourites by far, if you know what I mean, wink wink; Junichi Suwabe is a voice-actor/seiyuu who has been Grimmjow on BLEACH, Tseng on various Final Fantasy VII spinoffs, and Greed on Fullmetal Alchemist; and finally, Xen- I mean, Lucy Lawless is mostly known as Xena, but she was also on Battlestar Galatica as Number Three, and is on both of the Spartacus series.

What’s happening today?: It is Youth Day in Taiwan, commemorating 72 young revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives for the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty.

DVDs and Movies: Today, Tangled, Black Swan, and Mao’s Last Dancer. I saw Tangled in theatres, and it was super cute, so I’d love to see it again. I’m also a huge wimp, and didn’t have the courage to watch Black Swan without being able to pause, if you know what I mean. So now, I can rent it and pause when I get too freaked out. Problem solved! Finally, Mao’s Last Dancer just sounds like a really good, dramatic movie to watch.

Video Games: Square Enix has two games out today: a side scroller called Moon Diver is available for download on PSN and XBox Live Arcade, and oh boy, does it look awesome. Also, they have The 3rd Birthday, the third game in the Parasite Eve series. And finally The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is re-released today; it is now available on PSP!

Other: Today is the anniversary of the day yours truly was born. That’s right! I’m going to Pasta Pomodoro for a free entrée – and that’s what’s up! ♥

Celebrity Birthdays: Only more celebrity birthdays today too. Today is Julia Stiles‘ birthday! Julia Stiles has been in many movies, including 10 Things I Hate About You (one of my favourites), Save the Last Dance, the Bourne movies, and The Prince and Me. Most recently, she was in season 5 of Dexter and no spoilers, but wow, she was amazing in that role. I really didn’t think I’d like her, but I grew to like her, and then hate her, and then like her again! She was perfect.

It’s also Lady Gaga‘s birthday! I’m not that big a fan of Lady Gaga, but I do admire her for some of the stuff she is trying to accomplish, and her obvious marketing strategy. She’s unique, and I love her for it. You go, girl! (And you go, 90s catchphrases!)

And finally, it’s Gareth David-Lloyd‘s birthday. My personal favourite of all the birthdays today, as well as my personal favourite on the last TV show he was on: Torchwood. GDL played Ianto Jones, “secretary” and coffee boy extraordinaire. Man, did he look good in a suit. (Captain Jack’s words, not mine!) If only season 3 didn’t happen…. If only, if only…. I want to see other stuff GDL has been in, but most of the stuff is almost exclusively in the UK, with no chance of it hitting BBC America. Alas, I’ve been spurned.
