March Is Awesome 2011 #26

This is the First Annual March Is Awesome event! The amount to which I love my very own month of March is absurd; my birthday, my brother’s birthday, many of my friends’ birthdays, the beginning of spring, and much, much more! Will you join me in my celebration of March? Alright!

March 26th

Celebrity Birthdays: Just a ton of birthdays today; and so little time to do so. You guys ready?

Two leading ladies in politics (which I know I barely get into; I’m not really big in politics, I admit) share a birthday today: Nancy Pelosi and Sandra Day O’Connor. Pelosi was the 60th Speaker of the House, and served that role from January 2007 to January 2011. She is currently the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives. And she’s from my home state of California! And of course, O’Connor was the first female ever to be on the supreme court. Amazing women.”

One more intellectual on the birthday card list today, and that man is Richard Dawkins. Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, is considered to be the leading man in evolutionary science today. He also coined the term “meme” (pronounced “meem”) and, wow, internet memes are basically my lively hood.

Last but definitely not least, are the actors. James Caan, Leonard Nimoy, and Kazuhiko Inoue all also share a birthday today. Caan, though famous for his roles in The Godfather and Brian’s Song, played a huge part in my life when he played “Big Ed” on Las Vegas. I really loved that show. He was also in Elf, which is an awesome, adorable movie. He also attended Hofstra University (my alma mater!) but didn’t graduate and moved onto acting instead. The amazing Leonard Nimoy is extremely well known for his role in Star Trek, as Spock, the lovable half-human, half-Vulcan alien on the Enterprise. He also played the same character in the new Star Trek movie, and played William Bell on one of my favourite TV shows, Fringe. He is also an amazing photographer! (And didn’t I tell you one of Shatner’s co-stars would be on here?) And finally, Inoue is another seiyuu/voice actor who I came to love thanks to my friend Rebecca and her sister. Inoue was in the same game/series as Shinichiro Miki, whose birthday was on the 18th, and that series is called Harukanaru Toki no Naka de. Inoue is also a prolific seiyuu in Japan, voicing characters in the animés Fruits Basket, Ranma, Rurouni Kenshin, Vampire Princess Miyu, as well as the video game Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core.

Other: Today is also Catherine Willows‘ birthday! Catherine Willows is my favourite female character on CSI; she’s flippin’ awesome!

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

March 25th

In The Before Times: On this day in 1965, Martin Luther King, Jr. successfully led and finished a four day, 50-mile civil rights march from Selma to the capitol in Montgomery, Alabama. That man was just amazing.

Celebrity Birthdays: Today, we celebrate the birthdays of Elton John, Kari Matchett, and Lee Pace. Elton John has a special place in my heart for being the composer of my favourite Disney movie: The Lion King. Holy crap, you guys, you have no idea how many times I’ve listened to the soundtrack to that movie and broadway musical. Must’ve been at least ten times a day. Honestly. (And yes, I realize he’s done a ton of other things, but it’s my blog, isn’t it?) Matchett currently plays the CIA director, Joan Campbell on the amazing Covert Affairs. She’s a strong female role model, and since those seem to be in short supply these days, she’s to be revered. And finally Lee Pace is just one gorgeous actor who needs to be back on my TV screen immediately. I loved him in Pushing Daisies, and wow, the movie The Fall is just cinematically gorgeous, isn’t it?

What’s happening today?: For those who live in/were born in Maryland, you guys better be celebrating Maryland Day! Maryland was founded on this day in 1634 when settlers first arrived there from Europe! And for all you Tolkien nerds out there, today is Tolkien Reading Day! I could never get through a volume myself, but I’m sure you guys could read through The Hobbit today, right?
# Tolkien Reading Day

DVDs and Movies: Today Sucker Punch comes out, and I’m totally seriously when I say, “Holy crap, I want to see that.” I don’t think Zach Synder’s a film god or anything, I just totally want to see it. Okay. I’ll stop drooling. Also out today is Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules. I saw the first one because 1) I felt like it, and 2) my cousins read the books. It was cute. I’d see this one too, but on rental.

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

March 24th

In The Before Times: On this day in 1993, the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was discovered orbiting Jupiter. In July of the following year, it was observed that the comet was actually pulled apart due to Jupiter’s massive size and gravity. The comet is now nicknamed the String of Pearls, because it still exists as fragments. Isn’t science crazy?

Celebrity Birthdays: Three more geek-ish birthdays today! Jim Parsons, Alyson Hannigan and Peter Jacobson all share a birthday today. The amazing Jim Parsons is better known as the amazing Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory. I love Sheldon so much; I know he’d probably annoy me to death if he was real, but the truth is, I really love the guy, so I guess I’d be stuck with him. (Just like Leonard, Howard and Raj are too!) You may know Hannigan from such shows as How I Met Your Mother as Lily, Veronica Mars as Trina, and that one huge vampire show that everyone loves. What’s it called again? Oh yeah, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. My good friend Shawna (whose birthday was on the 20th! Good job for remembering!) loved Hannigan’s character, Willow, and I think she was my favourite character too. And last but certainly not least is Jacobson, who has a long list of film and TV credits, but I know him as Dr. Taub, the lovable short Jewish doctor on House. I love Taub’s strange relationship with his other co-workers, especially the one with his new roommate.

What’s happening today?: Today is World Tuberculosis Day. Tuberculosis, more commonly known as TB, is sadly still a prevalent disease, especially in third world countries.

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

March 23rd

In The Before Times: On this day in 1775, just before the American Revolution (which starts roughly a month later), Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty, or give me death!” speech in Richmond, Virginia.

Celebrity Birthdays: Michelle Monaghan and Steven Strait both share a birthday today! Monaghan is an amazing and beautiful actress, who has been in the award winning Gone Baby Gone, and won an award for Trucker. She was also in two movies with the lovely Robert Downey Junior, and she’s in the upcoming Source Code. Strait is an actor and singer; as a teenager, I had a huge crush on him in Sky High, and currently love listening to him.

What’s happening today?: Today is International World Meteorological Day, which kind of suits it, because the weather over here is being so weird lately. Tornadoes, mud slides, water spouts, hail. If this is a heads up that the world is ending in a year and a half, it’s not a very nice one.

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

March 22nd

In The Before Times: Way back in 1894, the first playoff game for the Stanley Cup starts! I live near San José, home to the San Jose Sharks, and while we’ve never played for the Cup, a bunch of my friends are huge fans of the game. And my brother used to play hockey, so we’ve been to a hockey game back in the day! (Around when we were 10/12 years old, I think.)

Celebrity Birthdays: Today is the day that Reese Witherspoon, William Shatner, and James Patterson celebrate a birthday! Witherspoon is a very popular actress, and I especially loved her in Walk The Line, and her voice work in Monsters VS Aliens. She’s also absolutely gorgeous, and going to be in a movie with Tom Hardy and Chris Pine – I love this. Shatner, if for some reason, you don’t know played Captain Kirk in Star Trek, The Original Series. I’ve only seen some episodes from TOS, but I loved what I saw! (Also, one of his co-stars will be on here another day, but I won’t say who!) And lastly, Patterson is an author of many mystery books, including the Alex Cross series (of which I was a fan) and and the Women’s Murder Club series, which was so popular, it was made into a (short-lived) TV series, on which one of the Stargate Atlantis actors guest starred! (Yes, it all comes back to SGA, I’m sorry.)

What’s happening today?: Today is International World Day for Water. While drinking from your clean, filtered water, remember, there are still millions of people without daily access to clean water.

DVDs and Movies: The Tourist, How Do You Know (with birthday girl Reese Witherspoon!), and Skyline come out on DVD today! And yes, I actually do want to watch these movies. The Tourist is about a man (Johnny Depp) who meets a woman (Angelina Jolie) and Depp gets mistaken for Jolie’s fugitive lover. How Do You Know is about a woman (Witherspoon) who has to choose between an old friend (Paul Rudd) and her current boyfriend (Owen Wilson). I’d choose Paul Rudd myself, but maybe that’s just me… It just sounds like a cute romantic comedy, and I’m a sucker for those. Skyline is a sci-fi action movie starring Eric Balfour and Donald Faison. Yes, I am just that easy.
