March Is Awesome 2011 #22

MIA '11

This is the First Annual March Is Awesome event! The amount to which I love my very own month of March is absurd; my birthday, my brother’s birthday, many of my friends’ birthdays, the beginning of spring, and much, much more! Will you join me in my celebration of March? Alright!

March 22nd

In The Before Times: Way back in 1894, the first playoff game for the Stanley Cup starts! I live near San José, home to the San Jose Sharks, and while we’ve never played for the Cup, a bunch of my friends are huge fans of the game. And my brother used to play hockey, so we’ve been to a hockey game back in the day! (Around when we were 10/12 years old, I think.)

Celebrity Birthdays: Today is the day that Reese Witherspoon, William Shatner, and James Patterson celebrate a birthday! Witherspoon is a very popular actress, and I especially loved her in Walk The Line, and her voice work in Monsters VS Aliens. She’s also absolutely gorgeous, and going to be in a movie with Tom Hardy and Chris Pine – I love this. Shatner, if for some reason, you don’t know played Captain Kirk in Star Trek, The Original Series. I’ve only seen some episodes from TOS, but I loved what I saw! (Also, one of his co-stars will be on here another day, but I won’t say who!) And lastly, Patterson is an author of many mystery books, including the Alex Cross series (of which I was a fan) and and the Women’s Murder Club series, which was so popular, it was made into a (short-lived) TV series, on which one of the Stargate Atlantis actors guest starred! (Yes, it all comes back to SGA, I’m sorry.)

What’s happening today?: Today is International World Day for Water. While drinking from your clean, filtered water, remember, there are still millions of people without daily access to clean water.

DVDs and Movies: The Tourist, How Do You Know (with birthday girl Reese Witherspoon!), and Skyline come out on DVD today! And yes, I actually do want to watch these movies. The Tourist is about a man (Johnny Depp) who meets a woman (Angelina Jolie) and Depp gets mistaken for Jolie’s fugitive lover. How Do You Know is about a woman (Witherspoon) who has to choose between an old friend (Paul Rudd) and her current boyfriend (Owen Wilson). I’d choose Paul Rudd myself, but maybe that’s just me… It just sounds like a cute romantic comedy, and I’m a sucker for those. Skyline is a sci-fi action movie starring Eric Balfour and Donald Faison. Yes, I am just that easy.

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

March 21st

In The Before Times:

Celebrity Birthdays: Today, composer Nobuo Uematsu, as well as actorsGary Oldman and Timothy Dalton all share a birthday today. Uematsu has composed almost all the music for Final Fantasy and other Square Enix titles such as Chrono Trigger, Front Mission, and Lord of Vermillion. Oldman is an accomplished actor, who has been in numerous films, including The Dark Knight and Batman Begins as Commissioner Gordon, Sid and Nancy as Sid Vicious, and as my favourite character in the Harry Potter series, Sirius Black. And finally, Dalton is also an accomplished actor, and one who can say that he’s played James Bond! (How many people can say that, hmm?) He also recently guest starred on Doctor Who, where he played a Time Lord. You can take it from me: that episode was awesome.

What’s happening today?: Three more international holidays for you: International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (International), World Down Symdrome Day, and World Poetry Day, to which I leave you with a silly poem:

Make the Pie Higher
I think we all agree, the past is over.
This is still a dangerous world.
It’s a world of madmen
And uncertainty
And potential mental losses.

Rarely is the question asked
Is our children learning?
Will the highways of the internet
Become more few?
How many hands have I shaked?

They misunderestimate me.
I am a pitbull on the pantleg of opportunity.
I know that the human being and the fish
Can coexist.

Families is where our nation finds hope
Where our wings take dream.
Put food on your family!
Knock down the tollbooth!
Vulcanize society!
Make the pie higher!
Make the pie higher!

That poem was composed of quotes that our past president actually said, which is pretty sad if you ask me. When we were doing poetry month in high school, I shared that poem. Whoever put it together: genius.

March 20th

In The Before Times: On this day in 1916, Albert Einstein (who, if you remember, had his birthday a couple days ago) publishes his general theory of relativity.

Celebrity Birthdays: Today is Chester Bennington‘s and Christy Carlson Romano‘s Birthday! Bennington is one of lead singers in Linkin Park (which I already established is an amazing band), and he is awesome. Another vocal artist, though definitely in a different light, Romano voices the amazing Kim Possible in the cartoon series. To say that I loved Kim Possible would be an understatement. I mean, that was a pretty awesome show, no?

What’s happening today?: At the end of today, it is officially Spring! Yay, Spring! It’s not my favourite season, because of all the pollen and my stupid hay fever working on overdrive (especially here in Cali, unfortunately) but it is when all the flowers bloom, and that means cherry blossoms on the trees. So pretty!

Other: Today is my good friend Shawna’s birthday. Shawna has been my friend since the sixth grade, and her house was right behind the middle school, and we would spend hours with her cats and rabbits and oh, I miss those days. Love you Shawna!

March 19th

In The Before Times: On this day in 1915, Pluto is photographed for the first time! But even then, it’s not recognized as a planet. Poor Pluto.

Celebrity Birthdays: Today Jake Weber, Bruce Willis, and Connor Trinneer all celebrate a birthday! Weber played Joe DuBois on Medium, and he remains one of the two reasons I watched that show for so long. He was amazing on it! And I just found out he’s British, which blows my mind, because he has a flawless American accent. I don’t know how you cannot be a fan of Willis, because he’s been in so many movies, you’re bound to like one of them. Pulp Fiction, Sin City, the Die Hard series, The Sixth Sense, The Fifth Element; the man has an undeniable talent. And oh my sweetness, Connor Trinneer. Trinneer starred as Trip on Star Trek: Enterprise, and guest starred on many of my favourite TV shows, such as Stargate Atlantis (Michael!), Numb3rs, Family Guy, Criminal Minds, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, NCIS, and NCIS: LA. The man is amazing and I’d love to see him on another show. And soon. Please?

Other: Today is my friend Ann’s birthday! Ann is not gonna be a starving artist like me because she’s studying to become a doctor! She’s adorable and ambitious! Aw, two things I love about people.

March 18th

Celebrity Birthdays: Three more birthdays for you! Sophia Myles, Adam Levine and Shinichiro Miki all celebrate their birthdays today! Myles was in Doctor Who during one of my first (and still favourite) Doctor Who episodes, The Girl in the Fireplace, where she was the love interest of the charming David Tennant. She also starred in Moonlight with that gorgeous Austrailian Alex O’Loughlin, and in Tristian & Isolde with the lovely James Franco. Basically, I’d like her career please. Levine is the main singer of the band Maroon 5, which I heard before their mainstream release because of some deal with the radio station I was listening to at the time. Songs About Jane is probably still of my favourite albums of all time. And lastly Miki is a Japanese voice actor, or “seiyuu.” Relatively recently (as in during college), I was introduced into the rabbit hole that is Harukanaru Toki no Naka de (yeah, try saying that three times fast) and the amazing character stories and plot twists that entail. Miki has also voiced many Japanese animé that I’ve watched, including Tsubasa RC, and Weiss Kreuz.

DVDs and Movies: So many movies coming out today! The Music Never Stopped sounds like an amazing and inspiring movie about a father trying to reconnect with his son, who has a brain tumor and can’t form new memories, using music from the 60s. The Lincoln Lawyer is about a criminal defense attorney who works from the back of his Lincoln town car, while at the same time representing a high profile client from Beverly Hills. Limitless is about a writer who takes an secret drug and changes his life, in both good and bad ways. Those all sound alright, but the one I’m most excited about is Paul, which stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in a sci-fi comedy, where they are UFO enthusiasts who stumble across a real alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) and the adventures they have trying to return Paul to his mothership. Now this? This is my kind of movie.
