March Is Awesome 2011 #12

This is the First Annual March Is Awesome event! The amount to which I love my very own month of March is absurd; my birthday, my brother’s birthday, many of my friends’ birthdays, the beginning of spring, and much, much more! Will you join me in my celebration of March? Alright!

March 12th

In The Before Times: More Women’s History! In 1994, the Church of England ordains its first female priests.

Celebrity Birthdays: In a sort of strange coincidence, today is Aaron Eckhart’s birthday! Aaron Eckhart is an actor who has been in many movies, but the one he is most famous for (at least recently) was The Dark Knight, in which he played Harvey Dent/Two-Face. I said it was a coincidence, because his newest movie was just released this weekend; you know it as Battle: LA.

What’s happening today?: Today is World Day Against Cyber Censorship. I personally think anyone who can access the internet should observe this day.

Other: Today the Girl Scouts’ Birthday here in the US. Did you get your Girl Scout cookies yet?

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

March 11th

In The Before Times: As if in accordance with Woman’s History Month, way back in 1993, on this day, Janet Reno is confirmed by the United States Senate to be the first female Attorney General of the United States, and she is sworn-in the next day.

Celebrity Birthdays: For some reason, March 11th is one of my favourite days of the year, and I don’t know why. So, I have three lovely actors with birthdays today: John Barrowman, David Anders, and Anton Yelchin. John Barrowman is a Scottish-American entertainer, who plays the brilliant and handsome alien Captain Jack Harkness on the brilliant (yet campy) sci-fi show, Torchwood. In addition, Barrowman hosts (and participates in) several reality shows in the UK, sings very well (and proves it by having numerous records, as well as sang in Broadway plays), and finally is an activist in the UK LGBT community. I seriously love this man. David Anders, on the other hand, played Adam Monroe on Heroes. Heroes was a huge part of my life for so many years, and I’m sad to see it go but it wasn’t that going that great at the end. However! Anders often guest stars on shows I regularly watch, so I see him a lot still. And that’s good, because that man is so, so handsome. And last but not least, Anton Yelchin is probably the most famous of the three, because he played Chekov in the 2009 Star Trek remake, and Kyle Reese in the 4th Terminator sequel, Terminator Salvation. Yelchin is just adorable, isn’t he?

What’s happening today?: Today, March 11th, is Johnny Appleseed Day! For those who don’t know who that is, Johnny Appleseed is somewhat of a folk hero, at least in my eyes. In elementary school, I was told that Johnny would travel the country, planting apple trees wherever he went.

DVDs and Movies: Today, a ton of movies are coming out that look good. Battle: LA, which, if you don’t know yet, is a sci-fi action movie, where aliens have come to colonize Earth and the Marines in Pendleton are our last hope. Or something. I still haven’t decided if I want to watch this or not, if you can tell. Red Riding Hood is a horror and fantasy movie, re-telling the classic fairy tale by the same name. I heard it’s going to be bad (Twilight director, anyone?), but Gary Oldman is in it, and I simply love Gary Oldman. Plus, I’m a sucker for (real) werewolves. I guess I’ll wait until the DVD is out, and I’ll rent it. Mars Needs Moms is about saving our Earth moms from the Martians who needs them for some reason. This looks adorable. I’m such a sucker for animated movies; just tell me where to go and I’m there. Lastly, Black Death is about a knight and a monk who are sent by the church to investigate tales about people being brought back to life during the outbreak of the bubonic plague (or Black Death). I heard this was good, and plus, it has Eddie Redmayne of Pillars of the Earth fame. He is absolutely gorgeous.

March 10th

In The Before Times: Two space news today! In 1977, astronomers discover that there are rings around Uranus (okay, stop snickering), and in 2006, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter finally makes it to Mars after being launched in August the year before.

Celebrity Birthdays: Two celebrity birthdays today, since I really like the 10th for some reason; today is Olivia Wilde‘s birthday, as well as Jon Hamm‘s birthday! Olivia Wilde played Dr. Remy “13” Hadley on House, and she was in the recent Tron Legacy. Wilde is also spectacularly gorgeous, you know, if you didn’t know that already. She’s pretty funny on her (verified) Twitter, and she seems very big philanthropist, from her website. Jon Hamm, on the other hand, plays Don Draper on Mad Men, the adorable (but crazy) neighbor Dr. Drew Baird on 30 Rock, and was an amazing FBI agent in The Town. He’s also hosted SNL a total of three time (and was hilarious each time), and he was amazing on The Nerdist Podcast way back in March (!!!) ’08.

What’s happening today?: In Shiogama, Japan, the Hote Festival is happening. The Hote Festival is one of those festivals in which men carry a sacred palanquin. In this case, the young men have one that weighs over 900 kilograms (one ton, for us US folks) on their shoulders, and then they have to walk down a terrifying flight of 202 stone steps. It’s both dangerous, beautiful and wondrous. Oh humanity!

Other: Today is the birthday of my second overall favourite character in the Harry Potter series: Remus Lupin. Oh my goodness gracious, I love this man to bits and pieces. Best Defense Against The Dark Arts professor, the most honorable Marauder (at least when they were children), and definitely what a werewolf should be: apologetic and kind during the day, unaware and unable to stop what he’s doing at night.

March 9th

In The Before Times: There’s been a lot of awesome recent news, including Dr. Antonia Novello being sworn in as Surgeon General in 1990, making her both the first Hispanic-American and the first female to fill the position; the first same-sex marriages were held in Washington DC last year; and finally this year, Space Shuttle Discovery landed for the last time today, after a total of 39 missions, and a full 365 days (and 12 hours) in space.

Celebrity Birthdays: Oh my gosh, today is Matthew Gray Gubler‘s birthday. The Gube, as he’s been called, plays Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds, one of my favourite shows. He’s also a phenomenal illustrator and artist, an amazing director, and just an all around, friendly, adorable guy.

What’s happening today?: Today is Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent for much of Christendom. Though I am not a believer, I like to participate in Lent, just to see if I can better myself by giving something up. This year, I’ve decided to give up candy. Let’s see if I can do it!

Other: Today is my good friend, Shayna Liu’s birthday. Shayna is probably the most adorable person in the world. She’s an accomplished photographer, but for some reason, she still has to get a degree in Hofstra. Check out her work on Flickr here!

March 8th

In The Before Times: Today is International Women’s Day. This started in way back in 1911 in Copenhagen, more for political reasons, but today is widely celebrated as a cross between Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. This year, President Obama declared that March is Women’s History Month (even more reason that March Is Awesome) and Secretary of State Hilary Clinton started the 100 Women Initiative. Today also happens to be the 100 year mark!

Celebrity Birthdays: Aidan Quinn celebrates his birthday on March 8th. Quinn has been in numerous movies and TV shows, but most recently, he played the man who took Liam Neeson’s identity in Unknown, and also the antagonist in White Collar, who used Neal’s cons against him.

What’s happening today?: As stated before, today is International Women’s Day! Today is also Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, and that’s a double celebration, if you ask me! Is anyone giving anything up for Lent? I still haven’t decided what to give up either.

DVDs and Movies: Today, The Walking Dead Season One comes out on DVD and BluRay. Also released is Exit Through The Gift Shop, that Banksy film that was nominated for Best Documentary in the Academy Awards.

Other: Dragon Age 2 is released today, which looks awesome. I still haven’t played the first one yet, though, so my opinion probably doesn’t matter. DA2 can be played on XBox 360, PS3 and PC! Also released today is Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle. (I’ve also seen it named Phantom Brave: Heroes of the Hermuda Triangle.) Only on PSP, this game was made by Nippon Ichi Software, which is one of my favourite video game companies.
