March Is Awesome 2011 #19

This is the First Annual March Is Awesome event! The amount to which I love my very own month of March is absurd; my birthday, my brother’s birthday, many of my friends’ birthdays, the beginning of spring, and much, much more! Will you join me in my celebration of March? Alright!

March 19th

In The Before Times: On this day in 1915, Pluto is photographed for the first time! But even then, it’s not recognized as a planet. Poor Pluto.

Celebrity Birthdays: Today Jake Weber, Bruce Willis, and Connor Trinneer all celebrate a birthday! Weber played Joe DuBois on Medium, and he remains one of the two reasons I watched that show for so long. He was amazing on it! And I just found out he’s British, which blows my mind, because he has a flawless American accent. I don’t know how you cannot be a fan of Willis, because he’s been in so many movies, you’re bound to like one of them. Pulp Fiction, Sin City, the Die Hard series, The Sixth Sense, The Fifth Element; the man has an undeniable talent. And oh my sweetness, Connor Trinneer. Trinneer starred as Trip on Star Trek: Enterprise, and guest starred on many of my favourite TV shows, such as Stargate Atlantis (Michael!), Numb3rs, Family Guy, Criminal Minds, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, NCIS, and NCIS: LA. The man is amazing and I’d love to see him on another show. And soon. Please?

Other: Today is my friend Ann’s birthday! Ann is not gonna be a starving artist like me because she’s studying to become a doctor! She’s adorable and ambitious! Aw, two things I love about people.

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

Celebrity Birthdays: Three more birthdays for you! Sophia Myles, Adam Levine and Shinichiro Miki all celebrate their birthdays today! Myles was in Doctor Who during one of my first (and still favourite) Doctor Who episodes, The Girl in the Fireplace, where she was the love interest of the charming David Tennant. She also starred in Moonlight with that gorgeous Austrailian Alex O’Loughlin, and in Tristian & Isolde with the lovely James Franco. Basically, I’d like her career please. Levine is the main singer of the band Maroon 5, which I heard before their mainstream release because of some deal with the radio station I was listening to at the time. Songs About Jane is probably still of my favourite albums of all time. And lastly Miki is a Japanese voice actor, or “seiyuu.” Relatively recently (as in during college), I was introduced into the rabbit hole that is Harukanaru Toki no Naka de (yeah, try saying that three times fast) and the amazing character stories and plot twists that entail. Miki has also voiced many Japanese animé that I’ve watched, including Tsubasa RC, and Weiss Kreuz.

DVDs and Movies: So many movies coming out today! The Music Never Stopped sounds like an amazing and inspiring movie about a father trying to reconnect with his son, who has a brain tumor and can’t form new memories, using music from the 60s. The Lincoln Lawyer is about a criminal defense attorney who works from the back of his Lincoln town car, while at the same time representing a high profile client from Beverly Hills. Limitless is about a writer who takes an secret drug and changes his life, in both good and bad ways. Those all sound alright, but the one I’m most excited about is Paul, which stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in a sci-fi comedy, where they are UFO enthusiasts who stumble across a real alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) and the adventures they have trying to return Paul to his mothership. Now this? This is my kind of movie.

In The Before Times: Two amazing science achievements today! In 1950, up at UC Berkeley, scientists announce the creation of element 98 “Californium“, naming it after my home state. And eight years later in 1958, the United States launched Vanguard 1, the first solar-powered satellite!

Celebrity Birthdays: Today is Gary Sinise‘s birthday, as well as Rob Lowe‘s birthday. Forest Gump is not one of my favourite movies, as my friends like to remind me, and that is partly due to Sinise’s performance; he was so good, his character actually scared me as a kid. Of course, now I watch CSI: NY and am constantly reminded by the fact that this man is extremely talented at his job. Rob Lowe recently joined one of my favourite TV shows, Parks and Recreation. He is so funny and great on the show! I’m glad they made him a season regular. And just a small mention to Kurt Russell, who is also celebrating his birthday today! I don’t really know much about Russell’s work, except for, wait for it, the movie Stargate. Which started the Stargate franchise, which is the center of my world on most days.

What’s happening today?: Today is Saint Patrick’s Day! Hope you’re wearing green and drinking green beer tonight! Or, if you’re not drinking, pinching those who aren’t wearing green!

In The Before Times: In 1958, Ford produces its 50 millionth automobile, the Thunderbird, and ten years later in 1968, GM produces its 100 millionth automobile, the Toronado. What amazing milestones! I personally like 60s and 70s era cars better than 50s era, but seriously, what beauties!

Celebrity Birthdays: Today is Alan Tudyk’s birthday. Tudyk has been in numerous movies, including Dodgeball, 3:10 to Yuma, and Death At A Funeral (the British version, not the American remake), but you probably know him best as Hoban “Wash” Washburne on sci-fi series Firefly, and its sequel movie, Serenity. I loved Firefly and Serenity, and Wash was one of my top favourite characters. I love seeing him in things!

March 15th

In The Before Times: In 1985, the very first domain name is registered on the internet. However, Symbolics.com, which belonged to a computer manufacturer, now no longer exists. Sad!

Celebrity Birthdays: Today is Oliver Wood Sean Biggerstaff’s birthday! As you can probably imply, Biggerstaff is known for playing Oliver Wood in the Harry Potter movie series. Also, today is Joe Hahn’s birthday. More commonly known as Mr. Hahn, Hahn is the DJ in the band Linkin Park. Linkin Park is still pretty awesome, in my eyes.

What’s happening today?: There is Honen Matsuri, a fertility festival, that takes place on March 15th every year in Japan. If you were to Google this to see images I do warn you: the Honen Matsuri is famous for having giant phallic statues, so avoid viewing it at work. There are also three international holidays today: International Day Against Police Brutality, World Consumer Rights Day, and World Day of Muslim Culture, Peace, Dialogue and Film.

DVDs and Movies: Lots of movies are newly available on DVD and BluRay today: Emmy-nominated picture The Fighter is historical drama about the story about boxer Micky Ward and his brother who helped him train; Hereafter is a fantasy-drama about a man who can see the dead and three people who are affected by them; The Switch is a comedy starring Jason Bateman (and that’s all I care about).

Video Games!: Video games are usually released on Tuesdays, and I decided to open this as a new category. (Before, it was in “Other.”) Today’s video game releases are: Okamiden which is something of a sequel from the previously released Okami. Also, a cute, retro, side-scrolling RPG is released today by the name of Jikandia: The Timeless Land. It looks cute! Okamiden is only available on Nintendo’s handheld (DS), while Jikandia is only available on Sony’s handheld (PSP).
