March Is Awesome 2011 #14

MIA '11

This is the First Annual March Is Awesome event! The amount to which I love my very own month of March is absurd; my birthday, my brother’s birthday, many of my friends’ birthdays, the beginning of spring, and much, much more! Will you join me in my celebration of March? Alright!

March 14th

In The Before Times: Hey nerds! On this day in 1994, Linux 1.0.0 is released. I don’t use Linux — I’m a designer; I live and breathe Apple OS — but many of my programmer friends do.

Celebrity Birthdays: Oh my genius: Albert Einstein was born on this day in 1879! And holy cylon: The one and only Grace Park was also born on March 14th! The Amazing Grace Park is mostly known for being Eight on Battlestar Galactica (geek alert!) and, most recently, Kono on the remake of Hawaii Five-0. I seriously love this woman.

What’s happening today?: Happy Pi Day! Celebrated by nerds and geeks alike, March 14th is Pi Day because March is the 3rd month of the year, and obviously the 14th is the 14th day of that month thus making it: 3/14 or 3.14. Go eat some pie and celebrate! My favourite is pumpkin! March 14th is also White Day in Japan and Korea. In Japan, Valentine’s Day is customarily a day for girls to give chocolates to the guys, either “honmei”/love chocolates or “giri”/courtesy or friend chocolates. And then, on White Day, men who received these chocolates reciprocate; usually with a gift that is double or triple the price value. I don’t know how it is in Korea, but I suppose it’s something similar.

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

March 13th

In The Before Times: In 1988, the Seikan Tunnel, the longest undersea tunnel in the world, opens between Aomori and Hakodate, Japan. (By the way, #prayforJapan, guys.)

Celebrity Birthdays: Today is Danny Masterson’s birthday! You probably know Masterson as Hyde on That 70’s Show. Hyde was my favourite character!

What’s happening today?: Today is Kasuga Matsuri in Nara, Japan. Kasuga Matsuri is a festival in which gagaku (a type of classical music) and bugaku (a type of formal dance) is performed.

March 12th

In The Before Times: More Women’s History! In 1994, the Church of England ordains its first female priests.

Celebrity Birthdays: In a sort of strange coincidence, today is Aaron Eckhart’s birthday! Aaron Eckhart is an actor who has been in many movies, but the one he is most famous for (at least recently) was The Dark Knight, in which he played Harvey Dent/Two-Face. I said it was a coincidence, because his newest movie was just released this weekend; you know it as Battle: LA.

What’s happening today?: Today is World Day Against Cyber Censorship. I personally think anyone who can access the internet should observe this day.

Other: Today the Girl Scouts’ Birthday here in the US. Did you get your Girl Scout cookies yet?

March 11th

In The Before Times: As if in accordance with Woman’s History Month, way back in 1993, on this day, Janet Reno is confirmed by the United States Senate to be the first female Attorney General of the United States, and she is sworn-in the next day.

Celebrity Birthdays: For some reason, March 11th is one of my favourite days of the year, and I don’t know why. So, I have three lovely actors with birthdays today: John Barrowman, David Anders, and Anton Yelchin. John Barrowman is a Scottish-American entertainer, who plays the brilliant and handsome alien Captain Jack Harkness on the brilliant (yet campy) sci-fi show, Torchwood. In addition, Barrowman hosts (and participates in) several reality shows in the UK, sings very well (and proves it by having numerous records, as well as sang in Broadway plays), and finally is an activist in the UK LGBT community. I seriously love this man. David Anders, on the other hand, played Adam Monroe on Heroes. Heroes was a huge part of my life for so many years, and I’m sad to see it go but it wasn’t that going that great at the end. However! Anders often guest stars on shows I regularly watch, so I see him a lot still. And that’s good, because that man is so, so handsome. And last but not least, Anton Yelchin is probably the most famous of the three, because he played Chekov in the 2009 Star Trek remake, and Kyle Reese in the 4th Terminator sequel, Terminator Salvation. Yelchin is just adorable, isn’t he?

What’s happening today?: Today, March 11th, is Johnny Appleseed Day! For those who don’t know who that is, Johnny Appleseed is somewhat of a folk hero, at least in my eyes. In elementary school, I was told that Johnny would travel the country, planting apple trees wherever he went.

DVDs and Movies: Today, a ton of movies are coming out that look good. Battle: LA, which, if you don’t know yet, is a sci-fi action movie, where aliens have come to colonize Earth and the Marines in Pendleton are our last hope. Or something. I still haven’t decided if I want to watch this or not, if you can tell. Red Riding Hood is a horror and fantasy movie, re-telling the classic fairy tale by the same name. I heard it’s going to be bad (Twilight director, anyone?), but Gary Oldman is in it, and I simply love Gary Oldman. Plus, I’m a sucker for (real) werewolves. I guess I’ll wait until the DVD is out, and I’ll rent it. Mars Needs Moms is about saving our Earth moms from the Martians who needs them for some reason. This looks adorable. I’m such a sucker for animated movies; just tell me where to go and I’m there. Lastly, Black Death is about a knight and a monk who are sent by the church to investigate tales about people being brought back to life during the outbreak of the bubonic plague (or Black Death). I heard this was good, and plus, it has Eddie Redmayne of Pillars of the Earth fame. He is absolutely gorgeous.

Ads and Tumblr crossposting

So the need to survive is growing greater than my pride and dignity, so I’ve signed up for Google AdWords. Now, now, don’t hate me yet; chances are, I won’t have time to implement this until the next layout change in six months (or so) so there won’t be ads yet. Just know that they will be here eventually.

Also, I’ve started a professional Tumblr (which can be found here), so if you’re on Tumblr, don’t be afraid to follow me!

I’m crossposting from Tumblr to WP and from WP to Tumblr, and I’m using two WordPress plugins for this. To take Tumblr posts and put them on WordPress, I’m using FeedWordpress which basically takes an RSS feed and posts it on your WordPress. To take my WordPress posts and put them on Tumblr, I’m using Tumblrize, which is a great plugin because all you have to do is put in your Tumblr email and your Tumblr password, and you’re basically done! It’s so easy to use and wonderful. Just like Tumblr itself!

In conclusion: Going to add ads soon, and crossposting to and from my Tumblr!
