March Is Awesome 2011 #6

MIA '11

This is the First Annual March Is Awesome event! The amount to which I love my very own month of March is absurd; my birthday, my brother’s birthday, many of my friends’ birthdays, the beginning of spring, and much, much more! Will you join me in my celebration of March? Alright!

March 6th

In The Before Times: Today marks the day that, in 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev introduced the first periodic table to the Russian Chemical Society. I’ve honestly always wanted to be the type of nerd to know the elements on the periodic table, but as luck would have it, I’m pretty bad at memorizing things.

Celebrity Birthdays: BMX rider Ryan Nyquist, from my very own Santa Clara County, has his birthday today! I used to watch so much X-Games and BMX in the old days.

Other: Not only is The Science Channel showing Firefly starting today (at 8pm!), but the seemingly timeless Pokémon series releases the two DS games Black and White today. Firefly remains one of my favourite TV series (too young and pretty to die!) and Pokémon was one of my first obsessions (and remained one of my biggest obsessions until the end of 7th grade)

As usual, if you know of any other exciting things happening today, feel free to leave them in the comments! Thanks for playing!

March 5th

In The Before Times: Samuel Colt makes the first production-model .34-caliber revolver in 1836. (And soon after that, he made The Colt that the Winchester brothers use to kill demons on Supernatural, am I right, fandom?)

Celebrity Birthdays: March 5th is Paul Blackthrone‘s birthday. Blackthrone, in addition to having the coolest last name, was Harry Dresden on The Dresden Files, and oh man, I really loved that show. Blackthrone is also a photographer and, might I say, really handsome.

What’s happening today?: In China, today is Xue Lei Feng (学雷锋) or Learn from Lei Feng Day. Lei Feng is a symbol of altruism; school and community events have people going to clean up parks and other locations. My mom just sang me a song she used to sing about Lei Feng when she was a kid!

Inspiration of the Day

Since I basically troll through websites and look at other people’s designs, I thought it’d be cool to post some designs and art I really like, and put credit where credit is due. Today’s inspirations are from Behance because I was looking for job postings and got sidetracked.

I still have yet to put anything on my Behance profile because I’m so intimidated by what I see. Anyway! Those are my picks for today! Go and check them out, they’re fabulous!

March 4th

In The Before Times: Way back in 1861, Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated for his first term as President of the United States.

Celebrity Birthdays: Chaz Bono, son of Sonny and Cher, is an amazing and inspirational figure in LGBT rights and activism, and it’s his birthday today!

DVDs and Movies: There are a ton of movies coming out today in theatres. I want to see Rango, an animated feature film about a chameleon stranded in the desert, The Adjustment Bureau, an intellectual thriller about destiny and who controls it, and HappyThankYouMorePlease, a dramedy about six New Yorkers coming to terms with being adults.

Other: Today is one of my best friends’ birthday! Happy birthday, Becca! ♥ Becca and I have been friends since, oh, sixth grade? She is just lovely, and adorable, and smart, and amazing all around.

March 3rd

In The Before Times: In 1969, Apollo 9 was launched to test out the Lunar Module, and as a result, it was the first manned flight with a Lunar Module. This was information critical to the actual moon landing later that year on July 20th.

Celebrity Birthdays: March 3rd is Julie Bowen‘s birthday! Julie Bowen is on one of my favourite comedies: Modern Family! She is lovely and hilarious!

What’s happening today?: In Japan, Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival) is celebrated on March 3rd. Japanese culture just fascinates me.

Other: Today is one of my best friends’ mother’s birthday. She (and the whole family, really) has been so lovely and kind to me, even though I just bum around their house. Happy birthday, Marilyn! ♥
